Movie Night: The Girl In The Show

A traveling Tom show is stranded in Kansas when their manager steals what meager funds they have.

Hattie Hartley (Bessie Love), who plays Eva in the production, decides to marry the local undertaker, so that he will fund the troupe and pay for her younger sister’s schooling.

On the day of the wedding, the troupe is booked for a performance at the last minute.

Hattie refuses to get married so that she can play the role of Eva, an act which reunites her with her true love, a member of their troupe

The Girl In The Show was an okay film considering it was one of the company’s first talkies. Granted, it felt more small scale highschool play kind of feel to it but you can’t expect a whole lot out of these early projects so I didn’t judge it too harshly.

I liked the cast and it was enjoyable just on those merits alone. The lighting and sound as well as the script were poor, the acting was poor but to be honest I kind of liked the pure raw feel of it all.

French vs. American social customs and behaviors are observed in a story about an American visiting her Frenchman-wed sister in Paris.

Le Divorce was portrayed as a comedy/romance/slapstick but it turned out as a heavy handed drama instead. Le Divorce was long winded and drawn out, the acting was good but I felt like the movie wasn’t quite sure what it wanted to be.

Between the French/American crossing over of traditions and beliefs, the family history, the art and the relationships it didn’t quite come together as well as it should have despite the quickie sum up at the end. I love Kate Hudson but I don’t think this was one of her better choice of films to play in.

How did Davy Crockett save President Jackson’s life only to end up dying at the Alamo? Was the Lone Ranger based on a real lawman-and was he an African American? What amazing detective work led to the capture of Black Bart, the “gentleman bandit” and one of the west’s most famous stagecoach robbers?

Did Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid really die in a hail of bullets in South America? Generations of Americans have grown up on TV shows, movies and books about these western icons. But what really happened in the Wild West?

All the stories you think you know, and others that will astonish you, are here–some heroic, some brutal and bloody, all riveting. Included are the ten legends featured in Bill O’Reilly’s Legends and Lies docuseries -from Kit Carson to Jesse James, Wild Bill Hickok to Doc Holliday– accompanied by two bonus chapters on Daniel Boone and Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley.
Frontier America was a place where instinct mattered more than education, and courage was necessary for survival. It was a place where luck made a difference and legends were made. Heavily illustrated with spectacular artwork that further brings this history to life, and told in fast-paced, immersive narrative,

Legends and Lies is an irresistible, adventure-packed ride back into one of the most storied era of our nation’s rich history.

I wasn’t as impressed by this book as I thought I would be.

The accumulation of persons written about and the information that was included wasn’t really anything new that isn’t already known.

Ignoring the misspelling and other errors it just wasn’t that big a deal. Granted I’ve always been a fan of history figures I think I was just expecting something else when I got this book.

Legends and Lies was recommended to me by a friend and it was good just wasn’t great and didn’t include any new information I hadn’t already seen written by other authors.

If you haven’t already read about this history or these historical figures before this will be a really great read but for those that have there isn’t a whole lot of fresh information or perspective to discover.

The acclaimed author of American Rust, returns with The Son: an epic, multigenerational saga of power, blood, and land that follows the rise of one unforgettable Texas family from the Comanche raids of the 1800s to the border raids of the early 1900s to the oil booms of the 20th century.

Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching portrait of the bloody price of power, The Son is an utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American West through the lives of the McCulloughs, an ambitious family as resilient and dangerous as the land they claim.

Spring, 1849. The first male child born in the newly established Republic of Texas, Eli McCullough is thirteen years old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him captive. Brave and clever, Eli quickly adapts to Comanche life, learning their ways and language, answering to a new name, carving a place as the chief’s adopted son, and waging war against their enemies, including white men-complicating his sense of loyalty and understanding of who he is. But when disease, starvation, and overwhelming numbers of armed Americans decimate the tribe, Eli finds himself alone. Neither white nor Indian, civilized or fully wild, he must carve a place for himself in a world in which he does not fully belong-a journey of adventure, tragedy, hardship, grit, and luck that reverberates in the lives of his progeny.

Intertwined with Eli’s story are those of his son, Peter, a man who bears the emotional cost of his father’s drive for power, and JA, Eli’s great-granddaughter, a woman who must fight hardened rivals to succeed in a man’s world.

Phillipp Meyer deftly explores how Eli’s ruthlessness and steely pragmatism transform subsequent generations of McCulloughs. Love, honor, children are sacrificed in the name of ambition, as the family becomes one of the richest powers in Texas, a ranching-and-oil dynasty of unsurpassed wealth and privilege. Yet, like all empires, the McCoulloughs must eventually face the consequences of their choices.

Harrowing, panoramic, and vividly drawn, The Son is a masterful achievement from a sublime young talent.

I thought The Son was great.. however there was just so much detail that it bogged down all the emotional scenes and made everything feel a little long between the character interaction that it stretches out and elongates everything that I felt could have been more summed up.

It seemed as I read further through the book that it was an author trait to really vividly detail everything in the book which felt more like an environmental read than emotional one despite the emotional experiences being the main focus of this book.

To sum up the emotional journey and the journey of the family The Son felt more like a collection of family stories that got passed down even though the reader gets to experience them from one event or another.

These events sort of carve out in history who the family as time passes become and how those events kind of change who they are. Its actually an amazing book worthy of five stars I just rated the book three stars because as a reader I’m more of a character person myself.

I down rated The Son because despite the emotional turmoil, the family and the large cast and how wonderfully it was written The Son felt like more of an environmental read that lacked the full development of emotional connections I prefer to have in stories like these.

I wanted to care more about the characters, I wanted to care about who was who and how they were connected and what their story was except the author tended to maintain his focus on just one person instead of all of them. Maybe its a little too greedy of me, but I still highly recommend The Son to anyone who hasn’t read it yet. The Son is a great book.

Mike Beacon is a champion at defending the net, but off the ice, he’s not so lucky. A widower and a single father, he’s never forgotten Lauren Williams, the ex who gave him the best year of his life. When Lauren reappears in the Bruisers office during the playoffs, Beacon sees his chance to make things right.

Lauren hates that she’s forced to travel with the team she used to work for and the man who broke her heart. There’s still undeniable sexual tension running between her and Mike, but she won’t go down that road again. She’s focused on her plans for the future—she doesn’t need a man to make her dreams of motherhood come true.

Lauren plays her best defensive game, but she’s no match for the dark-eyed goalie. When the field of play moves to Florida, things heat up on the beach.

One of Mike’s biggest fans doesn’t approve—his teenage daughter. But a true competitor knows not to waste the perfect shot at love.

Pipe Dreams was a book I almost didn’t finish, it almost landed in my DNF pile. I can’t believe it. A Sarina Bowen book. But I just could not for the life of me get past the whole reason for the new relationship, or how Mike just went about going into it, I didn’t like him as a husband, I didn’t like him as a father, I didn’t like him at all.

Mike was one of those characters that constantly put me off everything he did and why he was doing it. I just couldn’t get past it.

Lauren deserved a better partner out of the deal, she was a decent chick but I just didn’t think that she and Mike were a good fit.

In this irresistible romance from the New York Times bestselling author of Happily Bedded Bliss, appearances can deceive, but the heart is not so easy to fool… — — Rosamund Carrow has spent years learning the law by assisting her barrister father, despite the frustrating truth that the profession is closed to women. When he dies unexpectedly, necessity compels her to disguise herself as a man so she can step into the courtroom to finish his cases. She’s willing to put her reputation at risk, but she never expects that the greatest peril will be to her heart…

Lord Lawrence Byron is a rising star in London’s legal circles, despite his reputation as an unrepentant rakehell. When an upstart young barrister defeats him in court, he’s determined to discover everything he can about his rival. He’s stunned when he uncovers the shocking secret that his new opponent is actually a beguiling, brilliant woman, one he can’t help but want in his bed. Passion draws them together as they break all the rules, but it may lead to something more lasting like love..

*Beware this review contains spoilers but then again so does the blurb so don’t blame me just don’t read if you don’t want to hear it.*

As the final book in the Cavendish series I really wasn’t that enthused over the entire thing. The sad thing is, its written very well and its a great series but the whole fact that Lawrence has this attraction to Rosa the entire time not knowing that she’s actually a woman while disguised as a man then he goes balls deep into la la land the second he finds out that she’s a woman despite all the dead giveaway’s that she actually is a woman yet its insta-love the moment he realizes it?

Okay, so that totally didn’t make sense, I know. But that’s how it is in the book.

Rosa dresses as a man to finish up some last minute business her now deceased father left behind. Lawrence comes in all haughty as you please snob and a half walking about as if his shit don’t stink fights this constant pull toward Rosa while dressed as a man is a ten ton jerk and half most the time he’s around her then the moment its revealed that Rosa is really a she  or rather she’s the one who has been dressing as a man in court Lawrence goes haywire and can’t way to get to happy land the second he finds out about it.

Seriously its like he can’t wait to rip off their clothes just to pound into her how angry/happy he is about being deceived and it being revealed but can’t fight the pull of love the moment he has her. Talk about leading with the wrong brain.

Yet, despite the whole love thing the minor I’m going to punish you for lying deal was total BS… I call BS!!

Why should she have to apologize to him for what he did to her? How is that right?

I’m not calling the sexism reverse roll thing but he’s the one who was a complete dick. She should have sent his ass packing not fall all over him in weepy dismay begging for his forgiveness! No! She should have had him crawling on his knees for her.

But that’s what irks me about these period girls because they are just so quick to be someones doormat that it makes me want to shred the book to pieces.

In the end Bedchamber Games wasn’t one of my favorites in this series I just hope we don’t get any repeat stories like this in the future.
